By now you might have caught FiR Audio’s M-Series’ Universal IEMs at various shows around Asia in 2019. 2020 sees the M Series being officially launched and boy do we have the ultimate M Series cheatsheet available here for your reading pleasure.
The brainchild of an experienced member of the CIEM community, Bogdan Belenozhko, FiR Audio was started in 2018 with the goal of serving the professional audio community, catering to busy musicians on the road to whom IEMs are more a way of life than a consumer product.
With an initial focus on earphone maintenance equipment like the Headphone VAC and the VAC Jr. FiR audio managed to build a community of impressive clientele including Kanye West (link to package) and (one more name). In 2019, after requests for a new line of both CIEMS and UIEMs, Bogdan, building on his years within the industry, launched the M Series, a series of professional earphones that combine the best of cutting-edge earphone technology to push the frontiers of earphone design.
With a lineup of 4 earphones geared towards different people with different niches, you’ll be able to find something in your budget. Customs are available, but consumers who prefer a more consistent sound can opt for the universal fit version of the M Series.
FiR Audio’s Technology: What’s the Big Idea
Direct Aperture Acoustics
FiR Audio Makes use of Direct Aperture Acoustics, a system in which the IEM’s tubeless, spoutless chassis helps to manipulate sound in a variety of ways.
Classic BA designs contain a spout directing sound to the ear canal, in contrast, FiR Audio’s IEM drivers make use of a direct bore system, where the driver is mounted to point directly at the chassis’ nozzle. This takes the tubes of balanced armature drivers out of the equation, letting sound expand naturally and removing the muffled sound quality innate to BA driver systems.
Direct Bore: Direct Treble:
Removing the classic spout from a BA driver, FiR Audio’s Direct Treble drivers possesses a widened aperture, allowing more air through and negating any harshness or muffling, giving the listener a more natural, organic listening experience.
Direct Treble drivers harmonise with the other Drivers within the chassis, giving the M Series a smooth, natural yet resolved signature, a rare quality among its counterparts.
Direct Bore: Direct EST:
Electrostatic Tweeters (ESTs) seem to be all the rage these days, they bring out a track’s super-high frequencies, subtly tying the track together for better coherence and resolution. FiR Audio’s Direct Electrostatic Tweeter is also spoutless compared to other EST designs, it is placed closed to the chassis’ bore, giving a layer of roominess and airiness to the M5’s sound signature due to its handling of ultra-high frequencies.
Also known as Air Transferring Open Module, is a pressure release system developed by Bogdan Belenozhko following experimentation with a variety of nano-thin membranes and foam materials. FiR’s ATOM has a significantly reduced filter size, allowing in ear monitors to be less affected by air volume within the module while allowing for a positive effect on sound presentation, widening the soundstage while helping to alleviate listener fatigue.
The Balancing Act. Neutral sound with a slight oomph to low frequencies to keep you immersed in your tunes. The M3 pays homage to the classic, balanced studio sound while pairing it with FiR’s latest technological advances. Its dedicated bass dynamic driver provides deep bass extension and palpable bass detail, while 2 balanced armatures covering the midrange and treble respectively lend balance to the sound with an excitingly energetic midrange and effortlessly detailed and sparkly highs. These drivers are implemented with FiR’s proprietary Direct Aperture design and the 3rd generation ATOM pressure release system, providing an impeccably balanced sound with a vast soundstage while helping to alleviate listener fatigue— A signature perfect for extended mixing and audiophile use.
The Mezzo Soprano, the M4 pairs beautiful vocals with well-balanced treble and bass to bringing out the definition of audiophile music. Engaging and musical tuning, the M4 pairs 4 drivers with FiR’s unique technologies to this end. Using a dynamic driver for well-extended, highly textured lows, with 3 balanced armatures covering the midrange and high frequencies, tuned for a smooth, vast and yet highly resolved sound signature. Combing FiR's Direct Aperture design and the 3rd generation ATOM pressure release system. The M4 gives the listener musical sound with an even larger soundstage and a pneumatic pressure-free listening experience suited for vocalists, keyboardists, guitarists and audiophiles.
The M5 contains an Electrostatic Tweeter, blending technicality and musicality, making it both resolved and palatable.
A showcase of the best FiR has to offer in the IEM space. The M5 sports a dynamic driver for lows, 3 balanced armatures covering the midrange and highs and a spoutless electrostatic tweeter to assist in treble reproduction, giving the M5’s signature a layer of airiness not present in its counterparts. The M5’s optimized driver count gives it its effortlessly massive sound, with clarity and extension on both ends. With the 3rd generation ATOM pressure release system to provide the M5 with a cavernous, out of head soundstage and a pressure-free listening experience that is well suited to all professional and audiophile uses.
